Armchair 400 by Artek, also known as the Tank Chair, is one of the classic pieces of furniture designed by Alvar Aalto. The moniker “Tank” was inspired by the extra-wide armrests and robust upholstery of the chair. The shapely Tank was designed for the Milan Triennial in 1936.
The curved armrests of the Tank armchair are cut from the same piece of form-pressed solid birch lamella. That means they warp evenly over time and the armchair will remain stable with age.
The seat of the chair is upholstered in Zebra wool blend fabric. The black-and-white classic Zebra fabric is one of Aino Aalto’s discoveries on her European travels. It has been used in Artek’s interiors since the 1930s.
Seat height 37 cm. Seat depth 58 cm.
