The Armchair 400 by Artek, also known by the name Tank, is one of the classic pieces of furniture designed by Alvar Aalto. The nickname Tank comes from the chair's extra-wide armrests and voluminous upholstery. The voluptuous Tank chair was designed in 1936 for the Milan Triennial.
The curved armrests of the Tank armchair are cut from a single molded solid birch lamella bend. Both armrests live the same way over time so the chair won’t start swinging as it gets older.
The seat of the chair is upholstered in Zebra wool blend fabric. The black-and-white classic Zebra fabric is one of Aino Aalto’s discoveries on her European travels. It has been used in Artek’s interiors since the 1930s.
Seat height 37 cm. Seat depth 58 cm.
